26 DECEMBER 2009 - WHITE CHRISTMAS

How wonderful - a 'white' Christmas! Officially it wasn't because snow didn't actually fall on Christmas day, but everywhere was white! It made a very pleasant change from the rain and miserable weather which usually makes you close the doors on the weather on Christmas day.

After the fiasco in Liverpool, scrubbing and tidying seemed a perfect distraction, and energy boost. Tidy house, tidy mind ... right? I was feeling mentally drained after such a difficult end to the year. Hopefully next year will be better - I will certaibnly be stronger to face the future, though sadly I feel I may be even more suspicious of people or their actions. I am normally wary by nature, on account of my upbringing, so until 'words' and 'promises' are fulfilled I won't hold my breath. I have certainly learned my lessons this year, and to cope with disappointment.

Christmas day was so beautiful that it was impossible to stay indoors. The sun was shining and everywhere was white, so we put on our boots and went for a walk. I am sooo unfit after weeks and weeks stuck in my studio, so I had no idea if I could even make it to the top of Gummers How - normally an easy climb. However, it was amazing - deep snow and beautiful views, and so refreshing that I forgot to be tired! The landscape was transformed and everywhere was so peaceful - often the only other tracks you could see were those of deer or rabbits, or birds.

There were a handful of other people out though, I had a laugh with an Australian lady who couldn't quite understand what 'smashing' meant, when I remarked what a smashing day for Christmas. She was here for the festive season with her family and had never seen so much snow in one place. Even nicer was that her daughter has just been proposed to by her boyfriend on the mountain. He had come prepared with ring, glasses and champagne which they popped at the summit. There were tears of joy all round. How wonderful. It is so nice to see that there are still lovely people in the world!

19 DECEMBER 2009 - OFFICIAL 2009 IS NEARLY OVER - HOORAY!

The year has ended in complete farce, and yet again I am left with egg on my face, having to apologise to the hundreds of people I had advised about attending a show at the Cavern, including the press who had agreed to turn up. Devastated ... under statement. More hard to come by money, and hard work thrown into the wind. Sorry if I am sounding bitter - I am! Let down again by somebody I thought I could trust - big, big mistake. Perhaps I should have known better - I just hope nobody else is taken in by such false promises! The sooner this year is over the better!

12 DECEMBER 2009 - HAVERTHWAITE CHARITY SHOW

Christmas knocking at the door! I know I keep repeating myself, but I really can't believe how quick the time goes by. It feels like yesterday when I was packing the Christmas tree away, and now it is back up again!

And already the Haverthwaite Church Fashion Show has been and passed ... twice! The first time round it was cancelled due to the floods. People couldn't make it, the bridge at Backbarrow was (and still is) closed, and Ele the other designer who was exhibiting was stuck in Kendal and couldn't get home. Thankfully, all went smoothly the second time round:

We raised over £ 500.00 for Cumbria Flood Victims

That is fantastic ... it really makes all the hard work worthwhile.

Right: Ele Horsley modelling one of her own designs

We had all day to prepare and set up the mannekins but, as always' I was extra stressed before the show. Would the dresses fit? Would the make up artist be flexible enough? Would the models be good enough? I know it was only a local community event, and the models were local volunteers, but for me it was still important that everything was right.

Of course I had no reason to worry but I can't help it - I am a perfectionist! The girls were very good. They took in all I tried to teach them about the catwalk, and walked and posed much better than I had expected. I even spotted one young girl with real talent and passed her details on to my colleagues in Newcastle. Everybody worked so hard behind the scenes so to learn how much we raised really lifted my spirits. They'll need every penny with Christmas coming. It was all for such a cause. I can't forget the young family on the news: baby on the way, flat completely flooded, baby's toys, Christmas presents and cot ruined, and on top of that, no contents insurance because the area had been inundated before.

7 DECEMBER 2009 - MISS SUNDERLAND 2010

I received a call from Leah, at AM Models in Newcastle, to ask if she could use some of the photos we took of one of her girls, Alex, a few weeks ago. It turned out that she has won the title Miss Sunderland 2010 and they wanted a couple of shots for the Sunderland Echo. How fab is that? And rather weird because when I did the casting for the photoshoot in Newcastle Alex was at the top of my list. I just loved her smile. Sunderland Echo also called to ask my opinion of Alex . Apparently she is now going forward for Miss England. Go for it girl! She has my full support!

Here is the article from the Echo:
