Made Easy!
We have further subdivided North Cumbria following natural and political bondaries, mainly based on valleys radiating from rthe central massif of the Lake District. The subdivisions have been named according to chief rivers into which the waters of that valley drain, or other features such as the Solway for the coastal plain which extends inland from the coast north of Maryport. Carlisle covers the rich farming land strecthing south from the borders and embracing the county capital. As with other border regions this part of Cumbria has a rich hsitory - Hadrian's Wall, the infamous Border Reivers and numerous conflicts. The Derwent region is the only part of northern Cumbria within the boundaries of the Lake District National Park and embraces the vallets and lakes around Keswick, from Borrowdale and Derwentwater to Bassenthwaite and the lesser kown Caldbeck Fells.
